Capturing beauty and moments can be done in many ways. You can experience it simply by being there and taking in all that you can see, feel and hear.
You can write about it in stories or poems, cut intricate forms in stone and some people take the time to capture scenes in paintings.
I prefer to capture and share beauty by using my camera. To me, photography is the perfect way to capture not only the physical, visible details of a place but also a glimpse of the atmosphere and vibe.
Combined with the right state of mind, even lets you loose yourself in the moment and lead you back in time.
During one of my first urbex adventures this song played on the radio while I was driving to one of the most amazing buildings I have seen in my life. Before this day, my photographical passion was mostly focussed on people and landscapes, like many great photographers out there. However, that day, while walking around in that breathtaking place with her long empty hallways, majestic staircases and no one around me, no sound except for the wind blowing through a cracked window and Simon and Garfunkel still echoing in my mind, I realized, that my passion is with this beautiful “Sound of Silence”.
It feels like going back in time, finding history in places that haven’t been in use for years, often revealing incredible traces of time. Peeling paint and dew drops glistening on spider webs, ruffled curtains that flutter in a breeze. Portraits showing stern faces of the previous owners following your every move.
Occasionally, the silence in these places is deafening, I can’t help but be touched and swept away when I imagine what scenes once unfolded there. Every experience is a new adventure, a new story to be captured and told.
Buildings and places hidden from the world. Amazing and beautiful, but occasionally sad stories of the past that gradually fades away into the darkness. Stories and sounds that should never be forgotten, stories that can give joy, comfort or solace. Stories that people can relate to. Sharing the powerful beauty, strength and history of these memories does not need words, the images alone are enough to tell their story to those who choose to hear them.
Silent stories feed my imagination, silent stories are my passion, and my passion is to give you, your personal ‘sound of silence’.
